“My love, don’t go, there are raindrops (bullets) falling in Jammu’s mountains.”
This is one of my very favourite sad songs. It follows the story of a soldier who is posted in Jammu. His wife is singing for him, saying that it is raining (bullets) in Jammu and asking him not to go and leave her. This is what war does. It takes away people and peace.
The metaphor behind this song is that anyone listening will image raindrops falling, when in reality it’s not water drops but firing of guns.
𑚙𑚲𑚤𑚲 𑚠𑚮𑚝𑚭 𑚊𑚲𑚚𑚯 𑚢𑚲𑚤𑚭 𑚑𑚯 𑚝𑚂𑚣𑚴 𑚥𑚌𑚛𑚭, 𑚙𑚙𑚭 𑚙𑚙𑚭 𑚝𑚯𑚤 𑚢𑚲𑚤𑚯 𑚀𑚸𑚮𑚣𑚭𑚫 𑚙𑚴 𑚦𑚌𑚛𑚭
She says, “tere bina kaithi mera jee naiyo lagda”. It strikes the heart. “Tata tata neer meri ankhiyan ton wagda”.
“My heart is restless without you, so that warm water falls down from my eyes.”
𑚙𑚲𑚤𑚲 𑚠𑚮𑚝𑚭 𑚞𑚮𑚣𑚭 𑚢𑚲𑚤𑚭 𑚩𑚴𑚤 𑚝𑚭 𑚊𑚴𑚃, 𑚀𑚢𑚭 𑚠𑚭𑚞𑚱 𑚐𑚖𑚯 𑚊𑚲 𑚢𑚳𑚫 𑚙𑚲𑚤𑚯 𑚩𑚴𑚃
In the second verse, she says, “Amma Bapu chhadi ke main teri hoi.” She’s left her parents and family for him yet he has to leave her helpless here. And I can’t help but think of thousands of such people who have to lose their loved ones to war.

Today marks the 42nd death anniversary of Bharat Vyas, the writer of the timeless prayer song “Aye Malik Tere Bande Hum” and many other classic songs in various films. Bharat Vyas was a leading lyricist of the golden era of Hindi film music, writing songs for movies in the 1950s and 1960s. He was well-known for his work with the famous director V. Shantaram, penning lyrics for many memorable songs. Some of his notable films include Navrang, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Rani Rupmati, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Kavi Kalidas, Saranga, Janam Janam Ke Phere, and Stree. Born in Churu, Rajasthan on December 18, 1918, he moved to Bombay after finishing his studies in Calcutta. Bharat Vyas began his Bollywood career as a lyricist with Duhaai (1943), writing all nine songs for the film. The music of Duhaai caught the attention of producer-director W. Z. Ahmed, who owned Shalimar Pictures. At Shalimar, Bharat Vyas wrote 12 songs for the film Prem Sangeet. His major success at Shalimar was Man Ki Jeet (1944), where his song “Aye Chand Na Itarana, Aate Hein Mere Sanyya” became a big hit. He developed a close working relationship with composer Khemchand Prakash, creating musicals like Ziddi, Bijalee, Tamasha, and Muqaddar. The 1950s were the most productive years for Bharat Vyas. He collaborated with top directors like Bimal Roy, V. Shantaram, and Vijay Bhatt. During this time, he wrote some of the most beautiful songs for films like Chandralekha, Parineeta, Toofan Aur Diya, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Sahara, Anhulimal, Suvarna Sundari, Kavi Kalidas, Navrang, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Rani Rupmati, Saranga, Janam Janam Ke Phere, Hum Hindustani, Stree, and Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti. He also tried his hand at film direction with Rangeela Rajasthani (1949) and a few other Rajasthani films. Despite his success with many social films, Bharat Vyas became typecast as a lyricist for historical and mythological films, with most of his work in the 1960s falling into these genres. He continued to work through the 1970s and early 1980s, but the number of films he worked on decreased during this period. Bharat Vyas passed away in Mumbai on July 5, 1982. At the time of his death, he was working on a project to present the Ramayana in poetic form, set to music by Shyam Sagar. He was also directing two Rajasthani films. A brilliant poet, Bharat Vyas is remembered for his pure Hindi. Anyone with an appreciation for the language can quickly recognize his genius.

Oppression of Love (Can I fight for my freedom?)
Keerti’s father gripped her hand tightly, as if scared she’d run away (Where would she run to?). The wedding drums sounded like funeral music. The blessings, like knives, stabbed her heart. She felt like she was a boat floating in a foggy sea; lost and alone.
Her father sat her down on a chair, and after a while she stared into the potted water and the face of her groom. He was handsome, but nothing could compare to Varali. Her only love. Her greatest regret.
Keeri remembered the day they met like it was yesterday. How they bumped into each other on navratri, how she danced and swayed in the band’s music, how the kind hand that she accepted was so, so soft. They were created to heal, to protect.
Arjun’s hand was rough, filled with scars and built to hurt. When they held hands around the fire, Arjun pulling her along as she stared at the tied cloth connecting them like a chain around her hands.
When Varali had never pulled her, only held her hand as Keerti led her through the market stalls, wary of any white officers guarding the edges of the place. Her lover would whisper to her dreams of a free Bharat, a whole Bharat, where they could live freely, without the oppression of the White Men of the West. Where they could love each other freely, without fear of death.
But it was still a time of revolt and oppression and blood and death. If Keerti couldn’t find the courage to fight against her own marriage, how could she hope to fight for her country’s freedom?
She took the garland in hand and placed it around her husband’s neck, imagining her lover in his place for just a second. The illusion vanished when he placed the garland around her neck. It felt like a noose, cutting off her breathing. Keerti wonders if this is how Varali felt in her final moments.
The carriage ride to the mansion was agonisingly long. Her ‘husband’ gripped her hand tight. She stared into the the distance, imagining her late lover’s eyes as they landed on her standing among the crowd. Her face covered by cloth, and her final cry of “Jai Hind!”.
Keerti was pulled back into reality by someone shaking her shoulders. She was there at the doorframe of the house, the tamba of rice in front of her, waiting.
So she put her right foot forward, and toppled the tamba-
And toppled off the roof.
White Rice spilled onto the floor-
Red blood soaked the grass.
Arjun smiled at her face.
She could see Varali’s eyes.
She was finally home.
She was finally free.

{Would you believe me if I told you I made this for a school assignment from my IT teacher?
It was a proxy period and she told us to make stories and tell them in class. I told her I could make her a story but I’d need time. That night I watched ‘Ae Watan” and got inspired. It wasn’t even supposed to be angst.
She has never bothered me when I sleep during class till date. I should totally do this to all my teachers.}

[ad_1] Paromita Das GG News Bureau New Delhi, 12th November. Delhi’s persistent air pollution crisis has sparked urgent debates, with the Supreme Court recently questioning the efficacy of temporary bans on firecrackers. With Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih highlighting the health impacts of pollution, the Court underscored the necessity for a statewide, year-round ban on firecrackers, challenging the seasonal limitations of current regulations. This perspective marks a significant moment in Bharat’s environmental policy discourse, reflecting an evolving judicial approach towards the rights to health and clean air. Understanding the Court’s Position The Supreme Court’s remarks are rooted in the acknowledgment that air pollution in Delhi is a year-round concern and that temporary restrictions, primarily around the festive season, fail to address the overarching public health risks. Justice Oka’s statement, “We are of the view that no religion encourages any activity which creates pollution,” reflects a broader sentiment that public health and safety should not be compromised by tradition or festival customs. The Court’s rationale connects directly to citizens’ fundamental right to health, which is repeatedly endangered by Delhi’s severe air quality issues, exacerbated by activities like firecracker detonation. This stance raises an essential question: If air pollution remains high throughout the year, why should firecracker bans be limited to October through January? The Court’s argument suggests that periodic restrictions serve as an inadequate band-aid solution, failing to address a problem that significantly impacts public health and disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. The Case for a Permanent Firecracker Ban Health Concerns: Numerous studies have shown that air pollutants from firecrackers—like particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides—pose severe health risks, contributing to respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and even cognitive decline. For a city like Delhi, already battling dangerous pollution levels, adding firecracker emissions only worsens the crisis. Firecracker pollution persists long after festivals, as particles settle into airways and lungs, resulting in prolonged exposure. Environmental Impact: Firecrackers release not only harmful gases but also large amounts of metal particles like lead, cadmium, and other toxins, which seep into the environment, affecting soil and water quality. With an annual ban, Delhi could significantly reduce its cumulative pollution levels and mitigate adverse effects on ecosystems already compromised by urbanization. Ineffectiveness of Seasonal Bans: Limiting bans to peak pollution seasons fails to address the fact that Delhi’s air quality remains in poor to hazardous categories even outside these months. This piecemeal approach, focusing on short-term results, undercuts more sustainable, impactful environmental reforms that a year-round ban would represent. Public Awareness and Behavior Shift: Enforcing a permanent ban could help shift public mindset regarding firecracker usage. With continuous reinforcement, communities may adopt healthier alternatives to celebrate festivals, such as eco-friendly light shows or cultural performances, which would not only support environmental efforts but also reduce noise pollution. Challenges to Implementation While the argument for a permanent ban is compelling, implementing it poses substantial challenges. For instance: Regulatory Oversight: The Delhi government and police have faced criticism for inconsistent enforcement of existing bans. A perpetual ban would necessitate a dedicated task force or monitoring system to ensure compliance year-round, from wholesale distributors down to retail vendors. Social and Cultural Opposition: Firecrackers are deeply ingrained in Bharatiya celebrations, particularly during festivals like Diwali, weddings, and political rallies.
Banning them entirely would require significant public education campaigns to underscore the health benefits and environmental necessity behind such a measure. Economic Impact on the Firecracker Industry: The firecracker industry provides livelihoods for thousands of workers in Bharat. A permanent ban would affect these families, necessitating a long-term transition plan and alternative job creation in cleaner industries. A Shift in Perspective: Prioritizing Public Health Over Tradition The Supreme Court’s position is progressive, framing pollution control as a non-negotiable aspect of public health policy rather than a seasonal adjustment. The Court’s statement—“If anyone wants to claim the fundamental right to burst crackers, let them come to court!”—further emphasizes the stance that the right to public health supersedes individual preferences for traditional firecracker celebrations. The judiciary’s intervention signals a broader shift towards protecting citizens’ right to clean air and health, even if it challenges conventional norms. In advocating for this measure, the Supreme Court has taken a step toward institutionalizing sustainable urban policies in Delhi, underscoring the importance of ecological preservation alongside cultural observances. The Path Forward Education and Awareness Programs: For a successful transition, there needs to be extensive public outreach about the health impacts of air pollution and the benefits of avoiding firecrackers. Schools, NGOs, and media can play a pivotal role in shifting the public’s perspective. Promotion of Eco-Friendly Alternatives: Developing and promoting alternative forms of celebration—like laser light shows, public fireworks displays using green crackers, and community festivals—could help ease the cultural transition away from firecracker usage. Enhanced Regulatory Framework: The Delhi government and police need clearer guidelines and greater accountability in enforcing bans, including revoking licenses for violators and penalizing illegal sales. Furthermore, regular air quality assessments and public disclosures can bolster community support for stringent pollution control. Conclusion: A Judicial Call for Long-Term Health and Sustainability The Supreme Court’s demand for a permanent firecracker ban in Delhi is an acknowledgment of the pressing need for sustainable environmental governance. By framing the ban as an essential element of the public’s fundamental right to health, the Court has underscored that pollution control is not merely a seasonal or temporary issue but an ongoing priority. Enforcing a year-round firecracker ban could set a precedent for other states and cities grappling with similar pollution challenges, promoting a cleaner, healthier future. While challenging, the successful implementation of such a policy would mark a monumental shift in Bharat’s approach to balancing cultural practices with environmental sustainability and public health, reflecting a deep commitment to creating livable urban spaces for all citizens.
